چکیده

This study analyzes 39 Atlantic and seven Pacific benthic δC records to characterize obliquity and precession responses in Atlantic overturning since 3 Ma. Regional benthic δC stacks are also analyzed. A major transition in orbital responses is observed at 1.5–1.6 Ma coincident with the first glacial shoaling of Northern Component Water. Since ∼1.5 Ma, the phases of Atlantic benthic δC records from 2300 to 4000 m depth lag maximum obliquity by 59 (6.7 kyr) and June perihelion precession forcing by 133 (8.5 kyr). Comparison with North Atlantic sea surface temperature suggests that these orbital responses (particularly precession) in middle deep Atlantic δC are associated with changes in ocean heat transport and overturning rates. The mid-Pleistocene transition had little effect on the obliquity and precession phases of benthic δC but did result in a ∼50% decrease in the obliquity power of middle deep Atlantic δC at 0.6 Ma.

An enigma in estimates of the Earth’s dynamic ellipticity

The precession and obliquity frequencies of the Earth’s rotational motion are functions of the dynamic ellipticity of the Earth’s gravitational figure, and this connection has provided a novel bridge between studies of palaeoclimate and geodynamics. In particular, analyses of tuned climate proxy records have yielded bounds on the mean relative perturbation in dynamic ellipticity over both the l...

Plio–Pleistocene climate evolution: trends and transitions in glacial cycle dynamics

We describe the evolution of climate system dynamics by examining the climate response to changes in obliquity and precession over the last 5.3Myr. In particular, we examine changes in the shape of glacial cycles and the power of obliquity and precession response in benthic dO. When the exponential trend in dO variance is removed, its spectral power exhibits strong, proportional responses to am...

The influence of true polar wander on glacial inception in North America

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t The impact that long-term changes in Earth's rotation axis relative to the surface geography, or true polar wander (TPW), and continental drift have had in driving cooling of high-latitude North America since the Eocene is explored. Recent reanalyses of paleomagnetic pole positions suggest a secular drift in Earth's rotation axis of ∼8 • over the last 40 My...

A Pliocene-Pleistocene stack of 57 globally distributed benthic DO records

[1] We present a 5.3-Myr stack (the ‘‘LR04’’ stack) of benthic dO records from 57 globally distributed sites aligned by an automated graphic correlation algorithm. This is the first benthic dO stack composed of more than three records to extend beyond 850 ka, and we use its improved signal quality to identify 24 new marine isotope stages in the early Pliocene. We also present a new LR04 age mod...

Obliquity-driven expansion of North Atlantic sea ice during the last glacial

North Atlantic late Pleistocene climate (60,000 to 11,650 years ago) was characterized by abrupt and extreme millennial duration oscillations known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. However, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 23,000 to 19,000 cal years ago (23 to 19 ka), no D-O events are observed in the Greenland ice cores. Our new analysis of the Greenland δO record reveals a switch in t...
